When Maya Karlas came to the United States as a refugee from former Yugoslavia, she taught herself to speak English while teaching her 4-year-old daughter, too. Maya also speaks Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian fluently, and approaches interior design with the same attitude that she approaches linguistics. Every problem is waiting to be solved. When Maya meets new clients, she invests time into learning about them – their homes, their style and their practical needs. Her goal is always to learn how their home operates and to find furniture that will be functional for them. Figuring out how things work by breaking down their design and construction has always been interesting for her. Before she became a Design Consultant, she studied electro-mechanical engineering and worked in the steel industry for 15 years.
