The Sofa Table is the Unsung Hero of the Living Room

Often overlooked, the humble sofa table is a powerhouse of style and functionality that can completely transform your living space. Whether you're looking to define an open-concept area, add much-needed storage, or simply create a polished, layered look, a well-chosen sofa table is the answer. At Furnitureland South, we understand that this versatile piece is a key component in creating a beautiful and livable home.

Despite its name, the sofa table is not required to be near the sofa; although, it often is. Here are some options for its placement and purpose:

• Behind the sofa: The most common placement, a sofa table behind the couch fills the gap in open floor plans and provides a surface for lamps and décor.
• Against a wall: In a traditional room layout, a sofa table against a bare wall serves as a display surface.
• As a room divider: In studio apartments or large rooms, a sofa table can help separate functional areas.
• In an entryway or hallway: Many sofa tables also work beautifully as console tables in other areas of your home.

Considerations for Choosing the Right Sofa Table

If you're placing it behind the couch, to ensure your new sofa table is a perfect fit, keep these key considerations in mind:

• Height is key: The golden rule is that your sofa table should be the same height as the back of your sofa, or slightly lower. A table that is taller than the sofa can create an awkward visual disconnect.
• Length matters: For a balanced look, aim for a table that is at least two-thirds the length of your sofa. We offer small sofa tables that fit behind loveseats and long sofa tables for sectionals. For a very long sofa, you could even consider placing two smaller, identical tables side by side to create the illusion of an extra-long sofa table.
• Mind the depth: Sofa tables are typically between 12 and 20 inches deep. If floor space is limited, choose a narrow sofa table that measures 10 to 18 inches deep.
• Stow items away: In smaller homes or when keeping clutter to a minimum is necessary, a sofa table with storage can do twice the work. Open shelves provide easy access and display space for books and decorative items. Drawers keep clutter hidden while maintaining a clean aesthetic, and cabinets offer enclosed storage for larger items you want completely out of sight.

Styling Your Sofa Table Like a Professional

Whether you choose a more traditional, wood sofa table with elaborately turned legs or a sleek modern sofa table crafted from marble or iron, you can follow these tips to create a polished look:

• Create balance and symmetry: A pair of lamps on either end of a long sofa table provides beautiful ambient lighting and a pleasing sense of symmetry.
• Vary heights and textures: Create visual interest by grouping objects of different heights and materials. For example, a tall vase with greenery, a stack of books, and a small decorative bowl.
• Add a personal touch: This is your opportunity to let your personality shine! Incorporate family photos, travel souvenirs, or a favorite sculptural piece to make the display uniquely yours.
• Think in layers: Start with an anchor piece, like a large mirror or a piece of wall art behind the table, and then layer smaller objects in front.
