In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when French and English palace decor set the styles of design, royal excesses of the past had become insupportable and were rejected in favor of simpler, more classic designs. Greek and Roman principles of design were dictated by Napoleon in France, while King George IV of England embraced a more pure standard for his court. The result became defined as Neoclassic and Regency styles that inspired the Wellington Court Collection some two centuries later. Wellington Court embodies refinements of this era with its styles that bespeak old wealth and high station without need for ostentation.
