Furniture Industry 101:
Understanding & Applying Furniture Styles

Mixing Furniture Styles to Create Functional Spaces

Learning Different Furniture Styles

What if I told you that Furnitureland South sells over 1,000 brands at our store – the largest furniture retail store in the world? Put this into perspective: 1,000 brands + the thousands of products each of those furniture brands carry = 1.3 million square feet of showroom space. Then you have me: a small-town journalist from Texas who had never heard the words “etagere” and “vignette” before packing up her life and moving across the country to Jamestown, North Carolina – home to those 1.3 million square feet and my current workplace, Furnitureland South.

Now, why would I accept a copywriting position in an industry that I know very little about? From my first interview with Furnitureland South, I could tell that this company is comprised of genuine, knowledgeable people who LOVE to educate people like me (and, if you’re reading this, maybe you as well) because they have the opportunity to share their passion for furniture with someone who is eager to learn about it.

And I’ve been doing just that. When I began working at Furnitureland South a little over one month ago, my first assignment was to do research, more research and, you guessed it, even more research. Let’s face it: how would I, as the person who is tasked with producing content about this company, do so without knowing the difference between a dresser and a highboy (side note: have you seen the highboy at Furnitureland South? If not, that in and of itself is worth a visit to our store)?

With that, if you’re looking to become an expert in furniture or one small aspect of the industry, then you and I can go on this journey together! Now, like I said, I am a novice, so please be patient with me, as I am still learning.

The most integral aspect of learning about furniture is first understanding the different furniture styles. Once you have the styles down, you can look at a piece of furniture or décor and know whether it is traditional, modern or contemporary with farmhouse flair and piece together the look you’re going for. Recognizing these styles provides you with a basis of knowledge that will help you immensely down the road.

TRADITIONAL

Traditional is just like it sounds with dark, rich colors embellished with finer details. These details could be florals, stripes or geometric, tone-on-tone and small patterns.

NEW TRADITIONAL

New Traditional is on the rise, as it pulls in elements of traditional and contemporary styles to create a classic look with modern lines.

TRANSITIONAL

Transitional is where traditional and modern meet up and share their ideas with one another. This style is a simplified version of both traditional and modern; in other words, it is contemporary with a twist.

MODERN

With modern style’s sleek lines, shiny and smooth surfaces and natural materials in neutral and earthy colors, there is no need for additional detail with this design trend. All you need to accomplish this style is furniture with horizontal and vertical lines.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary has a stricter color palette than modern style, as it typically remains in the realm of the black, grey and white color story. Think of simple, clean designs with pure and saturated tones, and you’ve got contemporary style down.

COASTAL

Coastal incorporates light and breezy features that transport you to a beachy oasis. Natural wood, rattan material, seashells and rope work together to create a casual space that mimics the ambiance of a beach vacation.

COTTAGE

Cottage style focuses on comfort. Bright and airy spaces accented with warm colors and lighter spots of color here and there that make this a cozy styling option for your home. Classic patterns are used alongside small-scaled furniture and vintage accessories to transport you to a place of warmth.

RUSTIC

Rustic style is established using natural materials that look worn and weathered for a look that is relaxed and inviting.

FARMHOUSE

Farmhouse style aligns with the toughness and tradition of the farming lifestyle. There is an emphasis on well-used and loved items, natural wood accents, textures and materials. Using natural elements while incorporating the comfort of plush couches, comfy accent chairs and cushioned bar stools draw you into this style’s embrace after a long day.

INDUSTRIAL

Likewise, industrial style is encompassed by raw finishes, organic materials and repurposed, sturdy and architectural elements.

GLOBAL

Global style is an exciting design component that embraces cultural styles of a particular country and is often associated with bringing a vacation destination into your home.

MORE STYLES WORTH MENTIONING

While these are the overarching styles of furniture design, there are a plethora of specific styles that are awaiting your discovery, such as curated, British Colonial, Victorian, mid-century modern and eclectic.
