Ashton and Alyssa were going from sharing a bedroom as babies and toddlers to two separate bedrooms. After several meetings, it was determined that the main goals for the project were to create fun rooms for the children with easily changeable themes. Elizabeth also needed to use as many existing pieces from the original, shared bedroom as possible. Some painting was acceptable, but no structural changes would be necessary.
In Ashton’s bedroom Elizabeth used the original baby/toddler nightstand, dresser, bookcase and toy box by Dutalier along with a new Universal – Smart Kids twin over full bunk bed. The knobs on all of the existing natural furniture pieces were refinished to a dark, distressed finish to help integrate the chocolate, rustic bunk bed into the room. A distressed, red Bramble mirror was used above the dresser and various rustic accessories were sprinkled throughout the room to help reinforce the integration of the two styles/finishes. Star Wars (Outer Space) vinyl decals and linens, along with new and vintage toys, were used to make Ashton’s favorite theme easily changeable should he ever get bored with it. A new rug and window treatment were also added to complete the look.
Alyssa’s bedroom needed all new furniture. The centerpiece, a Bramble mirrored white chest/armoire with colorful drawers, was the first piece selected. This piece also set the palette for the rest of the space. A white, Vaughn Bassett queen bed with two Stanley Young America nightstands and a Bramble bookcase rounded out the large pieces for the room. Each of these pieces has a weathered or distressed finish, giving the room a rustic or antique style. Alyssa’s chosen butterfly theme was created by using vinyl and fabric decals that were placed all over the room, including walls and window treatments. Various accessories, art, ceramic and metal pieces highlight her chosen motif, but can be easily changed if necessary. Her window treatments were from the original shared bedroom, but were accented by a new butterfly detailed sheer. The linens and rug are a new addition to the space as well.
Each aspect of this project, from painting the walls to the installation of furnishings and accessories, was closely supervised by Elizabeth so she could make sure that her vision was executed to perfection. The result is two beautiful bedrooms that are not only what Martin and Vivian asked for, but exactly what Ashton and Alyssa dreamed of… just look at those happy little faces!
