CHERRY'S PORTFOLIO - RETIREMENT PARADISE

Dave and Joanne are some of my favorite clients. I met them in the store while I was working with the people they had just sold their house to in New Jersey. Dave and Joanne were retiring to Florida. Neither of them knew the other was there furnishing their new home. This was serendipity.

When we sat down to talk about what they wanted in their new Florida home, they both said they were more comfortable with a country look in blues and pinks and green. That’s what they had lived with – for 20 years.

Now, I am the first to say “Stay in your comfort zone.” Certain colors and styles make you feel at home, so why mess with a good thing. Right? This time I was wrong.

When we started laying out the rooms, Dave said he wanted to take one of the bedrooms and make it “his” room . . . the home office. He likes to play golf and wanted to include a few pieces of golf furniture. This made me think they might be ready for a change. Once we had all of the space planned and knew what we needed, the next step was finding just the right furniture.

I think Dave and Joanne were more surprised than I was when they fell in love with a Braxton Culler dining table with an expansive glass top and upholstered dining chairs with a palm frond embroidered on the fabric. Even though we looked at more of the country style lines, they kept coming back to this dining table. Dave asked me what direction I would take in the design if they decided to go with that table. Once we started, it was easy. The new color scheme brought in deep sienna, soft golds, dark browns, greens and cream.

Fortunately, there was generous space in the new house. The foyer opened into the dining room and then into the living room. Since the foyer was small, I added a luxurious bamboo grasscloth on the wall to define the space and placed a black rattan and wood chest against the wall with a brightly painted piece of art above the chest (this is not pictured). We chose a soft gold paint for the majority of the house since one room flowed into the next. The exception was the dining room which was done in a mossy green to complement the new dining room chairs and a deep sienna in Dave’s new home office.

These colors made the energy level in the house lower in the main space and a little higher in the work space which suited both of them.

In the living room I used deep sienna on the sofa and a whimsical leopard print on the traditional oval back chairs. These chairs were covered in fabric that could easily be brought into the family room if they needed additional seating. The draperies combined all of the colors in a vertical stripe and were hung just below the ceiling to create the illusion of height. I was selective in making sure the fabrics were a mixture of different textures so that the rooms had a warm and welcoming feel.

Dave and Joanne love their new home. Exactly one year to the day after we met, they came back to the store so that we could furnish the lanai. The same day the couple from New Jersey was in the store. Neither of them knew the other was coming. Serendipity??
