With so many selections to design a room, creating a look that works-practically and beautifully-necessarily varies with each client. The home itself dictates style in many projects. My task is to understand what can be retained and what needs to be changed to satisfy a particular lifestyle. Color is the first element that I consider when designing a space. The human eye responds first to tonal nuances, as they evoke an atmosphere of tranquility, whimsy, tradition, romance, nature, or whatever best reflects the client’s preferences. The color inspiration of a favorite painting, a patterned rug, or a handsome fabric has launched many unique and livable home environments.

Fourteen years of designing memorable rooms at Furnitureland South have added layers to my memory archive. We have the unique advantage of proximity to the largest collection of manufacturer’s showrooms in the world. I think of Furnitureland South as a well-edited version of the International Home Furnishings Center, which is closed to retail clients. Lighting, accessories, furniture, plants, rugs, and a fabric library under one roof make the shopping experience convenient and comfortable. I employ all the basic design principles of balance, scale, and proportion I learned while majoring in Interior Design at Florida State University, and have the advantage of being able to illustrate my thoughts by going to any of our hundreds of artful displays. Designing homes for real people is much more satisfying to me than the manufacturer’s showrooms I designed in the past. Working with manufacturers was a great learning experience, but my pleasure comes from hearing the client’s reaction to the finished product. My selections are very deliberate, and each interacts with the other design elements so that the overall effect is pleasing to the client, and reflective of his or her lifestyle. I am an Allied Member of ASID, which provides continuous opportunities for re-education as the design elements change with the times.
