Q: I want to paint a room red. How can I be sure it will feel livable?
A: When it comes to choosing colors, I don’t like rules, but there are some general guidelines to follow.
Do not choose a red that is too bright or too glossy – it will be hard to live with over time. I suggest selecting a true red, which has both brights and darks in it. A nice example would be Red Read from Sherwin-Williams.
Another option is to look at what you have around the house that you really like. If for instance, you have a red chenille throw that has been in your family for years, make that the inspiration for the color on the walls.
Also, you can look to nature for inspiration. The natural red clay colors of the North Carolina Mountains gives the color a meaningful reference point and is soothing to live with. A wonderful example would be Benjamin Moore, Apache Red.
Red takes on different personalities depending on what color it is combined with. Red and dark green present elegance and richness, whereas red paired with ivory provides a contrast and a lighter and fresher look.
Whatever red you choose, remember to focus on details and do the research.
