In its more recent history, Furnitureland South has seen unprecedented growth.
In 1992, a 342,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art distribution center was built, enabling the showroom space to grow to a third of a million square feet. Shopping for furniture was made even more enjoyable with the opening of Riverdale's Restaurant in 1995. History was made again in 1999 when the 500,000-square-foot Mart building was completed, along with the world’s largest highboy. Furnitureland South became an all-inclusive, one-stop shopping environment for customers from all parts of the globe.
A new state-of-the-art, climate-controlled distribution center with Hyperflow capability opened in 2001, and the former distribution center was converted to the Clearance Center. In 2003, the Skylink, which connects the Showroom to the Mart, was completed. The crowning jewel of the campus, the Skylink is a 400-foot, glass-encased walkway that contains smartly styled groupings showcasing an urban loft look with sleek, clean lines that reflect a contemporary sophistication. Riverdale’s Restaurant was replaced by Bear Rock Cafe in 2004, and in 2005 Furnitureland South launched a new catalog division
A family-owned and -operated company …
Darrell Harris not only founded Furnitureland South but he continues to this day as CEO of the company. After raising their two sons, Jeff and Jason, Stella Harris joined the company on a full-time basis and is actively involved in the management of its day-to-day affairs. Jeff and Jason literally grew up in the business and are intimately involved, as Executive Vice Presidents, in its daily operations, as well. All members of the Harris family have a tremendous love for and interest in the home furnishings industry, and Darrell considers Furnitureland South not only his livelihood but his hobby. He can usually be seen in the showrooms almost every Saturday.
