Design Consultant Cherry Yount received a visit from clients Poppi and Vik after they purchased their new home in Charlotte, NC. They had recently moved from apartment life, sold all of their “college” furniture and wanted their new home to “look like something out of a magazine.”
As enthusiastic new homeowners, the first thing they did was paint their rooms. That became an inspiration as well as a challenge for Cherry to find just the right rugs and fabrics. Their style was more transitional with clean lines and rich colors, so changes were also made to the interior of the house, beginning with re-staining the hardwood floors in an espresso finish. The kitchen cabinets were replaced with a more modern style that was slightly darker than the floors, and new granite countertops replaced the dated white tile. One of the biggest changes was a redesign of the wall in the family room with the off-center fireplace. Centering the fireplace and adding niches on either side faced with stone allowed the fireplace to become the focal point of the room.
The lines of the Michael Weiss sofa, along with its nailhead design, add a look of casual elegance to the family room. Cherry also chose comfortable slipper chairs by Vanguard, which keep the room open and inviting. A hand-tufted Surya rug anchors the furniture in the space. Without much space for artwork, Cherry designed the window treatment to serve as “art” on that side of the room. Installed just under the crown molding, the window treatments bring the eye up and around the room.
All of the plantation shutters were removed from the windows to open up the rooms. In the living room, Cherry dressed the windows in beautiful draperies and then used a more formal, upholstered cornice with draperies in the dining room. She pulled the “mocha” color from the living room throughout the house and, in doing so, was able to use turquoise as the accent color in the living room, which works beautifully with the deep yellow of the family room.
The guest room had been painted a soft gray-blue. In keeping with Poppi’s love of bold color and pattern, Cherry selected Hampton Hill bedding in a black and white geometric pattern, purchased ready-made draperies, and customized the accent color and trim. The pop of red was just enough to make both her and Vik smile!
The master bedroom was one of the biggest challenges, as it had been painted two shades of plum. Cherry wanted to make this room sophisticated, serene and inviting. The upholstered Stanley bed in dark mahogany, crisp white bed linens, custom draperies in a geometric pattern and the Orion rug pulled this room together perfectly.
When “move in” day arrived, Cherry sent Poppi and Vik to work just as at the Furnitureland South truck pulled up. Then came another truck with installers and all of the help Cherry needed to completely transform their home from “empty” to “finished” in 8 hours. At the end of the day, when they walked in the door and saw a completely furnished home, Poppi made all the work worthwhile … she said through tears, “I can’t believe this is my home and I get to live here.”
