Most of Cherry Yount’s projects involve updating an old look or furnishing a new home. This time, she was challenged with a redesign of her own work that she did eleven years ago!
In 2004, Chrystal and Dave had just gotten married, bought their first home and come to Cherry for help furnishing their new space. Chrystal wanted lots of color! And she specifically requested a red sofa. Dave wanted dark woods and some leather, to add a touch of masculinity and earthiness to the room. Now, eleven years and two kids later, they wanted to update their existing look. Initially, they were looking to purchase a larger home, but after not being able to find exactly what they wanted, they decided to stay with the house they loved, and simply give it a fresh new look, which included a remodel of the kitchen and family room.
Their overall goal for this project was to open up the kitchen and living room into one cohesive space, add an island to provide extra seating in the breakfast area, and position it so that Chrystal would be able to watch the children while they were playing in the backyard. Life with a family and two kids is hectic, so she wanted her home to feel serene and calm and reflect soothing colors. Chrystal and Cherry spent a lot of time discussing the color palette. Chrystal knew that she wanted grays and teals, but she also wanted to maintain a warm and inviting feeling. The duo’s dilemma was that these colors were too “cool” for her, so to give the room a warmer and more inviting feel, they chose a gray with undertones of brown for the walls, and a warm cream color for the cabinets. Chrystal loved the fabric that Cherry found for the toss pillows so much that it became the inspiration for the color palette for the entire space! They pulled the teal into the dining room, the green into the study and the aqua, cream and gray into the living room and kitchen.
After redesigning the kitchen, they added hardwoods throughout the first floor in a warm brown tone, and a beautiful, soft Loloi area rug in the family room. Since their Huntington House upholstery had held up so well for 11 years, they decided to purchase their sofas from the same manufacturer again and add chairs and an ottoman by King Hickory. They also wanted more seating in the family room. By placing the TV above the fireplace, it allowed Cherry and her clients to create a harmonious space for entertaining with two sofas facing each other and two comfortable chairs. The couple loves family photos, so the team added built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace to give them plenty of room to display their favorite photos and keepsakes.
The Broyhill table in the formal dining room and the Stanley wall unit in the study they had from the original design was in great shape and still looked good, so Cherry and her clients kept those and all they had to do was update the wall color in both rooms, add complementary window treatments, and these redesigned, refreshed and refurnished rooms tied in beautifully with the rest of the house! This project was so much fun for Cherry, because she got to work with some very special friends once more, and redo her own design work! Chrystal and Dave say it feels like home… again.
