West Brothers Furniture

One of the important things to consider is the environmental responsibilities associated in working with solid wood. West Bros. is committed to ensuring that there is as little left-over material as possible.

In addition, any defects cut out of the wood at any stage of the furniture-making process are not simply sent to a landfill site. Rather, rejected pieces are ground into shavings and sold to farmers for use under straw in barns and animal pens to absorb moisture (furniture wood has to be kiln-dried to between 6%-8% moisture content so it has a high rate of absorption). This not only extends the usefulness of the straw, but keeps the animals warm in the winter.

Once the wood shavings are saturated, they're used for fertilizer in the fields, being biodegradable and totally organic.
