Furniture Isn't Fast Food
by Laura Saintsing

Is the furniture you buy today going to last for 5 years and then be kicked to the curb only to end up taking residence in a land fill? When you make a furniture purchase are you planning for the future or are you buying disposable pieces? While times have changed, how we feel about our homes hasn’t. Our homes are our safe havens of comfort whether 500 square feet or 15,000. Shouldn’t we be filling them with cherished pieces? As a child, I remember visiting my grandmother and seeking those old familiar furniture pieces she kept in her home, the cherry sideboard with the nick my brother made when he knocked over the candlestick, the cannonball bed that in my child eyes looked as if it should have been in a castle, and the charming old metal bed whose paint was worn and chipping but on every visit its inviting squeaks lulled me to sleep at night.

That same old bed with its chipping paint and tiny squeaks now lulls my son to sleep every night. Furniture pieces used to be part of our family. They were cherished and sometimes coveted. They were moved from room to room and repurposed, or they were passed to another family member to continue a tradition. If a piece was kicked to the curb it was a sad thing, not a status symbol showing you could afford a new look. If you are considering a new furniture piece or a whole new room of pieces, think about the memories you hope to make. Think about the good times you hope to share and consider pieces that will last long enough to help you share those memories for a life time. Furniture isn't fast food, It should be enjoyed, savored and languished over. The photos in this article are products that can be found at Furnitureland South. Just give us a call!
