DESIGN TIP - Janice Hughes

Purple Mountain Majesty

sofa

For me, mountains create a sense of calmness and serenity. Mountain homes, be they grand or small, coupled with the beauty of the surrounding landscape, just seem to invite you to come inside, make yourself comfortable and relax.  I think their interiors should reflect that same welcoming tone.

You can never go wrong with a neutral color palette for upholstery with plush cushions that invite you to come, sit and unwind. Leather is also a great option; several upholstery manufacturers now offer fabric and leather combinations. It works well to use that combination on the sofa and then repeat the fabric in companion lounge chairs and ottomans. Two manufacturers to look at are Bradington Young and Leathercraft. You can always bring in color with contrasting throw pillows, drapery fabric and accessories. When choosing an accent color, be sure to repeat that color in several places to bring a sense of continuity to the room. This also holds true when choosing dining, bedroom or occasional furniture. Keep the decorating theme interesting by using a few painted pieces. Be sure to look at these manufacturers with multiple finish color options in mind: Lorts, Eddy West, Habersham, Harden, or Guildmaster. A don't miss manufacturer for a mountain home is Old Hickory Tannery, even if you only use some of their pieces as accents.

You can have lots of fun with accessories: lamps by Sedgefield, chandeliers by Arte De Mexico that look like antlers; even bronze animals that can greet you at the door by Metropolitan Classics! Old Hickory Tannery also offers beautiful bedding that will go well with this decor.

Don't forget the screened porch or patio. A great group is Chatham Road manufactured by Whitecraft and it’s a don't miss!  There is outside aluminum furniture that looks just like wicker, made by Castelle, and Lloyd Flanders offers wicker that is made to be used outdoors.

As you can tell, I get quite enthusiastic when decorating "purple mountain majesty" retreats. As a Sales and Design Consultant at Furnitureland South with nineteen years experience in the furniture industry, I would be happy for you to contact me with your furniture needs – whatever they may be.  The manufacturers I have mentioned are only a few of the over 700 that we offer here at Furnitureland South. In the top right-hand corner of our website is a listing for Manufacturing Partners. Click that link and you have a direct link to many of the manufacturing lines we carry. Better yet, a trip to our store will give you access to over one million square feet of showroom space, and I, of course, will be happy to be your guide. Let me know if you would like me to send you our DVD, which will give you a "tour" of what we have to offer here at the World's Largest Home Furnishings Showplace.

Contact Information

I have lived in High Point, NC all my life and have two grown children, a son, Jay and a daughter, Laura Fulton. Married to the same man for 45 years, so that says something for my perseverance, not to mention my age. I have 20 years experience in sales and design in the furniture industry. I find nothing more fulfilling  than pulling together the furnishings needs of my clients and having them go home happy with the choices made. Well I MIGHT find being Nana to my six granddaughters just as fulfilling!!
