COLOR TRENDS

Pick up any design magazine from the last few months and on the cover you will see color schemes that will soon find their way into your clothes closet and home furnishings environment. Color trends grow into fashion statements.

To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of today's color trends I attend Color Forecasting classes and subscribe to, and spend many hours pouring over, home design and fashion magazines. Do you notice advertisements that reach the pinnacle of color to grab your attention?

Recently a client sent me her floor plans and several Sherwin-Williams paint color strips as proposals she had chosen for their 10-room golf retreat. After several phone conversations, we narrowed the paint choices for the public and private spaces throughout the house.

Once I knew the specific colors that would ground each room, my work was to prepare design ideas for the styles, fabric colors and finishes of the furnishings. To begin the process, I spent several hours perusing my personal issues of Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home and House & Gardens. I began to get a sense of the current colors I felt would complement the wall colors and the house design. Page after page would be ripped from the magazine and placed aside, be it an advertisement or design room scheme. These pages began to take on a definite direction that would keep this home in fashionable colors for years.

By the time my client arrived for our scheduled appointment, I had prepared a photo collage from the pages of these magazines showing not only furnishings concepts, but prominent colors that would complement the décor as well. I even found inspiration in an ad for bronzer which I selected to represent the copper metallic accents used throughout the house. My client was able to see, at a glance, how the style concepts and color schemes that I selected for her would blend into the home to create the perfect family golf retreat.

Carol has over 30 years experience in the home furnishings industry working along side her husband who was a manufacturer of home furnishings. Carol has had the good fortune to enjoy extensive travel throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, the Mid East, Greece and Tahiti ... just to name a few places.

In 1988 Carol began a successful 11 year career in Hospitality Design & Sales while living in New York City. Despite having her formative years in the North Carolina mountains, Carol quickly adapted to the New York City lifestyle enjoying the fast pace and varied neighborhoods. The fortune to travel and live in different areas of the country has afforded Carol the ability to create interiors with the essence of many cultures offering eclectic ideas to fit every lifestyle. She brings the world to your design table as she has observed and taken in ideas gathered while traveling and experiencing first hand the diversity of the world. Carol has passionately designed home interiors for friends and clients for over 7 years.

In her spare time, Carol enjoys creating abstract, pastoral and therapeutic interpretations of her art work using acrylic paints. As an avid cook, her gourmet meals are frequently enjoyed by friends and family. She lives with Sophie and Tucker, her adopted canines.
