At Ease with Color by Christina Garrison and Sharon Barnhill
Many of us tend to be timid when it comes to home color. We gravitate to what seems safe – basic white or one of its myriad variations. But think about it: Introducing wall color offers the best affordable solution to changing and updating the look of your home. And what’s more, if you decide you don’t like the colors you’ve chosen, you can always change them without breaking the bank. There are several methods for selecting color. You can begin with the formal areas of your home – the foyer, living and dining areas. Pull color from the largest upholstery item or from a rug. A good rule to follow is dark to light, beginning with the floor: darker color tones for the flooring, medium tones for the walls and lighter tones for the ceiling. Most designers will use the 60/30/10 method of placing color in a room – 60% for the dominant color, 30% for the secondary and 10% for the accent color. Although it is helpful to consult the color wheel (developed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666), you may need to look no further than in your own closet to see what colors appeal to you. Analogous colors are those next to each other on the color wheel and are appropriate for those wishing to obtain a casual or relaxing mood. Complementary colors reside opposite each other on the color wheel and are useful for creating a more formal mood appropriate for entertaining areas.
But what, you may ask, does color mean and how does it relate to you and your home? The following list gives you a general feel for how different colors affect us. Blues: Blues are not to be sung here. Blue is a global color and relates to peace, tranquility, harmony and cleanliness. It can lower the pulse rate and body temperature. Greens: Probably the most favorite color, greens are associated with nature, health, luck, youth, healing, generosity and order. Black: Not just for mourning. It exalts sophistication, elegance, wealth, style and formality.
Orange: Drama, warmth, balance, vibrancy, flamboyancy and demands attention. Yellows: The warmest color of all, signifying sunshine, cheerfulness, inspiration and joy. It is the most-used color because it is friendly. White: Balance, purity, cleanliness, simplicity, winter and youthfulness. Purple: Exotic, helps to develop the imagination. Associated with spirituality, wisdom and royalty. As you can see from this list, color can be used to energize or to enhance a sense of well-being or to help create romance!
