Color has the greatest visual impact in a room. Dont be afraid to use it. Using color doesnt mean you have to paint the walls red - but hopefully you will be inspired to select colors you like and then decide how you want to apply them. For example, one of the questions I ask clients is whether they want their room to whisper, talk or shout. In a room that whispers, red would be used as an accent in toss pillows and accessories; in a room that talks, red might be a chair or rug. In a room that shouts, we would definitely paint the walls red!
Use your imagination and be a little daring . . . everybody likes color. It's up to you to decide just how much!
Rhythm is usually the overlooked element. Clients often say, I dont know how to pull the room together." Look at your room horizontally in thirds, from top, middle to bottom. If your room has what I call the eyebrow effect, where you see horizontal lines going around the room, then all you need to do to create better rhythm is to cross over the lines, add some curves and get your eyes moving up and down instead of across. Rather than hanging one large picture over the sofa, group four to six pictures together that take up more space than one large one. Use a combination of shapes on a wall shelf. Place a vase and a picture with decorative plates on either side. And dont forget plants and florals as they help give the room life, shape, color and rhythm. If your room has good rhythm, your eyes will travel around the room.
The final thought in designing your room is to maintain the harmony in the furnishings you select. Its not only acceptable to mix woods and finishes but more pleasing to the eye. The pieces dont have to match, but could be complementary to each other.
My goal as a designer has always been to help my clients create a home that reflects their individual personalities so that when they come home at the end of a long day and open the door, they cant help but smile.
