1980’s Modern Makeover

After designing hundreds of client projects, Design Consultant Stephanie James took on the ultimate challenge of redesigning and renovating her own home. Built in the 1980’s, it was in need of a loving, modern makeover. Dark hunter green, burgundy prints, small rooms and country plaids dominated the space. Honey oak flooring stretched mundanely up the staircase, and the kitchen cried out for help from its laminate counter tops and dark burgundy walls to its outdated oak cabinets. Stephanie’s goal was to create a spacious look with up-to-date colors.

To create more of a “great room” feel, Stephanie opened up several walls, installed archways for visual interest, and expanded the foyer opening to nine feet. The finished foyer warmly welcomes guests into the heart of the home, beginning with a delightful mahogany chest from Maitland-Smith. Light dances off the mirrored drawer fronts, and the chest’s curved lines emulate the newly installed archways.

Stephanie selected a large Huntington House sofa with soft, cozy curves and rich textured fabrics for the living room. Two upholstered chairs flank the sofa for symmetry, and a gorgeous 54" square Swaim cocktail table is perfect for entertaining.

In the sunroom, fresh limestone replaces old, dark green tile and soft, buttery walls give the space a peaceful feeling. Perfect for reading and relaxing, the sunroom showcases custom-made Huntington House upholstery, a hand-knotted zebra rug from MWB Designs, a beautiful Hickory White sideboard and an elegant painting of birds from Chelsea House.

The small dining room adjoining the kitchen now features a 54" round Hickory White table with four over-sized dining chairs and an elegant sideboard that was repurposed from an old wine room. Stephanie chose chocolate hues for the walls to achieve a deep, rich look that is only enhanced by an 8x10 Peshawar rug.
