If you can embrace the idea that the design of your home is a reflection of your heart, then you’ll discover there is no room for mistakes or fear.

I’ve been fortunate to work with hundreds of clients during my career and have found that, while preferences differ, the approach to helping them find their personal style is the same.

To begin, examine the architectural design of your home. Is it traditional, contemporary, Spanish, Victorian, cottage or, perhaps, an urban high-rise? Ask yourself what attracted you to this particular style. In answering that question, you will be able to bring those qualities into the interior design process. It is almost always easier to identify your dislikes, and this, too, is part of working toward discovering your personal style.

A helpful suggestion to the indecisive client is to purchase a selection of home magazines. There is a huge variety from which to choose that reflect interior styles in all parts of the country. Build a file for each room in your home and save pictures that appeal to you, whether for the style of furniture, the colors, use of patterns and textures, or for the overall feeling of the room. Once you have 10 or so for each room, you’ll begin to see a pattern develop. You can also obtain valuable insight by visiting a paint store. Spend some time putting together colors that make you feel good. Don’t be afraid of color – it is a powerful design tool. And remember, the decision to paint walls white should be a color choice!

Fabrics are the easiest way to bring color, texture and pattern into your space. A beautiful fabric can serve as the inspiration for an entire room. Combine patterns to create interest and balance. Large florals mixed with stripes, plaids or geometric patterns give a space greater visual appeal. Let the style of the house help guide you in selecting fabrics that reflect its character and charm.

Accessories reinforce the expression of your personality and bring a finishing touch to the layering process in a room. Instead of overloading your home with little knick-knacks, select pieces that make a statement about your personal style. The repetition of color brings warmth and harmony to your room. Remember to group in odd numbers and varying heights. Consider the floor coverings, lighting, artwork and florals. Don’t be afraid to mix old with new or use something unexpected in a bowl or vase to add a jolt of color.

Finally, stay true to yourself. If you simply don’t like blue, then don’t use it. My job as a designer is to facilitate the selection process and to help you create a home that is a reflection of your style and good taste.
