Debunking the Myths
by Ronnie Hayes
Most designers will tell you that bringing different textures into a room is critical to creating the perfect room. In addition, they will speak about making sure that you include a solid along with stripes or plaids and patterns in your room and one of the best ways to do both of those things is with leather. However, there are a number of myths about leather that inhibit consumers from putting this wonderful upholstery in their home.
Myth 1: Leather is too expensive.
Leather is a tremendous value. While the average fabric upholstery product will last about seven years, the comparable leather piece will still look great for an average of 15 to 20 years, and with leather being a solid (most times), leather pieces are very versatile as you change the design of your room over time.
Myth 2: Leather is too delicate and requires us to be too careful with it.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Leather is the MOST durable of all upholstery options and with the advancements made in the past two decades in the tanning process, even the natural leathers have become more durable. Leather is also very low maintenance, requiring only wiping down with a wet washcloth most of the time. The finished (or protected) leathers are outstanding for family use, and for peace of mind I recommend that you invest in the Guardsman leather protection for all the leather pieces in your home.
Myth 3: Leather is too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer.
Leather is adaptable to climate and body temperature. An unused leather piece stays at the room temperature where it is located in the home. Be aware of any direct sunlight on the piece as this will not only affect the temperature but also will cause fading. Once you sit on the piece, it will assume your body temperature for a comfortable feel.
Myth 4: Leather is too masculine.
While it is true that a lot of men like the look and feel of leather, everyone can find leather appealing. Large leather cocktail ottomans or fabric/leather combination living room pieces are great options to bring leather into a room from a design perspective. In addition, many leather furniture manufacturers have added designer colors to the palette to attract a wider consumer base.

Leather is a great value, durable and versatile. Whether you put in a complete leather group in your living room or simply incorporate leather barstools in your kitchen or bar area, leather should be on your radar when you are putting your room together
