DESIGN TIP - Olga Smith

Rugs: Art for Your Floor
by Olga Smith

A rug is the foundation for a room, a canvas on which to design all the other elements. It can be the focal point or play a supporting role as taste dictates. With so many fabulous selections in style, shape and material, you’ll need to consider a few factors to make the wisest choices:

Color: Color is one of the most important things to think about when shopping for a rug. If your room already has a lot of bold color, you can either tone it down by selecting a rug that is more subdued in color and design, or enhance the bright look by repeating one of the dominant colors. If your space is more neutral, you can add a splash of color with the rug, or achieve a chic monochromatic effect and add texture with a tone-on-tone rug.

Design: A rug should be considered a piece of art, something you enjoy looking at and love living with. One with a bold, beautiful design can be a focal point of a room that contains understated furnishings. Conversely, the more adventurous the color and pattern of upholstered items, the more understated your rug will need to be so as not to compete with the furniture. The key is to look for designs and colors that enhance comfort; you needn’t worry about trends – in either rugs or furniture.

Size: For a dining room, the rug should be large enough so that chairs remain on it even when they are pulled out. In other rooms, such as a living room or study, a rug could be large enough for the furniture to fully rest on it, or you might want the rug to be placed in front and between furniture so that you can showcase beautiful wood floors. By using the smaller rug, you still achieve a sense of warmth for the space. I can show you exactly how any size rug will look with a scaled layout of your room.

Shape: Rugs come in a variety of shapes other than rectangular. A round, scalloped or even star-shaped rug can add flair and pizzazz to the appearance of your room.

Material: The type of fiber will determine the look, feel and performance of your rug. Synthetic rugs come in vibrant colors, feel soft and are easy to maintain. They represent an outstanding value. But nothing can really compare with the look and feel of natural wool rugs that are luxurious to the touch. Their luminous colors result in a rich, heirloom appearance unmatched by synthetics.

Cost: Whether handmade or machine-made, synthetic or wool, rugs come in every shape and size designed to fit any style or budget. Furnitureland South offers substantial savings and extra value in its Rug Gallery, and I can help you find the perfect rug for your design needs at the best possible price.

Padding: Investing in a good quality rug pad will not only absorb noise and prevent slipping, it will help keep your rug looking beautiful for years to come.

So, now that you have some insight into some of the more important considerations in purchasing rugs, you’ll want to get started. I can help you with your projects in any or all of several ways, depending on your goals.

If you have an empty room, we can begin by finding a rug you love and build a room around it; then we can move on to select fabrics and finishes for your furniture choices. When all the elements are assembled, you will be amazed at how the right combination enhances the colors and textures of both the furniture and the rug.

If you already have furnishings and just need a rug, bring your fabric swatches and paint chips so that I may assist you in choosing a rug that coordinates. You will love the defined and finished look of your room with the right rug, whether it’s tying a seating area together or adding the perfect touch to the bedroom.

And if you need assistance in updating the look of a room with a few new furniture pieces and accessories, I will be glad to guide you through our showrooms full of exquisite furnishings to find the perfect items to complete your project.

Finding just the right furniture and accessories without costly mistakes can be a challenging process. I can eliminate the challenging part so that your shopping experience proves a pleasurable and productive one. We want you to have fun!
