Basic Elements of Design

When planning your room, always remember the 5 basic elements of design: Function * Style * Color * Rhythm * Harmony

First, consider function. Consider the way your room will be used. Is it a family room where children and pets are welcome; a formal living room for entertaining; or perhaps a den for reading and studying? Once you have decided how the room will fit your family’s lifestyle, plan your space on paper or on our Website using the online Room Planner. This is one of the first things I do with a client before selecting the furnishings. Is there a focal point in the room such as a fireplace or a beautiful lake view? Then we will begin space planning around the focal point, or we will create one with wall hangings or furnishings. First and foremost, the furniture has to fit; secondly, it should be arranged to take advantage of the focal point; and lastly, the traffic flow through the room needs to be easily accessed.

Style is creating a look that reflects your personality. Most of the clients I work with can’t say whether their style is traditional, contemporary, modern, country or transitional. And with the great new looks furniture manufacturers are coming out with today, it’s even more confusing to try to “label” your style. So don’t try! Select basic pieces you like. Your “style” will evolve naturally as you build on your design.

Color has the greatest visual impact in a room. Don’t be afraid to use it. Using color doesn’t mean you have to paint the walls red - but hopefully you will be inspired to select colors you like and then decide how you want to apply them. For example, one of the questions I ask clients is whether they want their room to “whisper, talk or shout.” In a room that “whispers,” red would be used as an accent in toss pillows and accessories; in a room that “talks,” red might be a chair or rug. In a room that “shouts,” we would definitely paint the walls red!

Use your imagination and be a little daring . . . everybody likes color. It's up to you to decide just how much!

Rhythm is usually the overlooked element. Clients often say, “I don’t know how to pull the room together." Look at your room horizontally in thirds, from top, middle to bottom. If your room has what I call the “eyebrow effect,” where you see horizontal lines going around the room, then all you need to do to create better rhythm is to cross over the lines, add some curves and get your eyes moving up and down instead of across. Rather than hanging one large picture over the sofa, group four to six pictures together that take up more space than one large one. Use a combination of shapes on a wall shelf. Place a vase and a picture with decorative plates on either side. And don’t forget plants and florals as they help give the room life, shape, color and rhythm. If your room has good rhythm, your eyes will travel around the room.

The final thought in designing your room is to maintain the harmony in the furnishings you select. It’s not only acceptable to mix woods and finishes but more pleasing to the eye. The pieces don’t have to match, but could be complementary to each other.

My goal as a designer has always been to help my clients create a home that reflects their individual personalities so that when they come home at the end of a long day and open the door, they can’t help but smile.
